The curriculum

Ten modules, start to finish

The complete syllabus, exactly as it appears inside your dashboard. Open any module to see what it covers.

01 Vehicle Familiarization & Pre-Drive Checks
Learn to identify all vehicle controls, steering, pedals, mirrors, signals, gauges and safety features. Perform a complete pre-drive inspection: tyre condition, mirror adjustment, seat position, seatbelt and blind-spot awareness before starting the engine.
02 Defensive Driving
Learn to expect the unexpected, anticipate sudden stops, unexpected turns and reckless drivers. Master the Golden Rule: assume other drivers may make mistakes. Understand safe following distance, long-distance driving, taking breaks every 100 miles or two hours, and staying alert.
03 Distracted Driving & Texting While Driving
Learn what counts as a distraction, visual, cognitive, manual and emotional, and how each one increases crash risk. Review the cell phone rules that apply to you, what counts as a "text message", and how to eliminate in-vehicle distractions before you drive.
04 Driving Under the Influence & Implied Consent
Understand how alcohol, marijuana and prescription medication impair driving. Learn the Implied Consent Law, BAC limits (0.08% for adults, 0.02% zero-tolerance under 21), what happens if you refuse a chemical test, and the escalating penalties for repeat offences.
05 Seat Belts, Car Seats & Child Restraints
Review the seatbelt law for all occupants, front and back; child passenger restraint requirements for children under four; and belt-positioning booster rules for ages four to under seven. Understand the AAP guidelines for the safest restraint at every stage.
06 Proof of Insurance & Safety Responsibility
Learn about the Safety Responsibility Act, minimum liability coverage requirements ($25,000 / $50,000 / $25,000), when proof of insurance is required, acceptable electronic proof, and the consequences of driving or being at fault in an accident without valid insurance.
07 Pavement Markings: Lanes, Centre Lines & Barriers
Understand how to read pavement markings, broken and solid yellow centre lines, broken and solid white lane lines, double lines, directional arrows, two-way turn lanes and crosswalks. Learn when passing is allowed, when it is prohibited, and how to yield to pedestrians.
08 Traffic Signs & Signals
Recognise the eight standard sign shapes and eight standard colours, regulatory signs (STOP, YIELD, DO NOT ENTER, WRONG WAY), warning signs, guide signs and work-zone signs. Learn what solid and flashing lights mean, right-on-red rules, lane control signals and traffic officer priority.
09 What To Do When Pulled Over
Learn the correct step-by-step behaviour during a traffic stop, signal and pull over safely, turn off the engine, stay in the vehicle, keep your hands visible, follow instructions, and know which documents to have ready. Understand the possible outcomes and how to raise a complaint properly.
10 Organ & Tissue Donation
Learn how organ and tissue donation saves lives. Watch a short film on how transplants work, understand the donation process, and learn how to register as a donor when you apply for or renew your driver's licence.

Who it is for

Built for first-time drivers of any age

The course does not assume you have ever sat behind a wheel, and it does not talk down to you if you have.

Teens getting their first licence

The usual route: complete the required classroom hours, pass the knowledge test, then build road time with an instructor or a parent. Most of our students are here.

Adults who never learned

No age limit and no classroom full of sixteen-year-olds. You work through it privately, at whatever hour of the day suits you.

Parents teaching a learner

Plenty of parents take the course alongside their teenager so they know exactly what is being taught, and what to reinforce during practice drives.

New arrivals and transfers

Driving elsewhere does not mean knowing the rules here. The course covers the local law you will actually be tested on.

Questions

Before you enroll

How long do I have to finish the course?
There is no deadline. The thirty hours are yours to spread over as long as you need, most students take two to four weeks, but some finish in a week and others take a couple of months. Your progress is saved either way.
Can I use my phone, or do I need a computer?
Either. The course runs in any modern browser on a phone, tablet or laptop, and your place is saved to your account rather than to one device. Start a module on a laptop and finish it on your phone if you like.
What happens if I fail a quiz?
Nothing bad. You are shown which answers were wrong and why, and you can retake the quiz as many times as you want. There is no penalty, no waiting period and no extra charge.
Does this course include driving lessons?
No, this is the classroom portion, taken online. Behind-the-wheel training is a separate course of six in-car hours with a DPS-certified instructor. It costs $300 on its own, or $250 when added to a course like this one.
When do I get my certificate?
As soon as you complete the final module. It appears in your dashboard ready to download or print, there is nothing to wait for and nothing arrives by post.
Is this course accepted where I live?
Driver education rules differ by state. We are state-approved under licence MS-4365, and our study material and test prep are open to students anywhere. Use the state selector on our home page to see exactly what applies where you live before you pay.
How old do I need to be?
Fifteen is the usual minimum for driver education, and there is no upper limit at all. We teach plenty of adults who simply never got round to a licence.
